What Is Keyword Density

Keyword density in SEO is the ratio of your target keyword to total words on a page. It helps to know what keyword density is in order to understand its effects and importance on search rankings.  The more high-value keywords you can get onto one web page, the better it will rank in SERPs . Whether you are trying to figure out what keyword density “should” be or want to know how many times you should use that important phrase, here’s some info about keyword density for SEO (search engine optimization).

Keyword densities effectively matter. These days, not much is mentioned about it in SEO circles, but keyword density is still an essential part of good Search Engine Optimization. The fact is that other Search Engine Optimizations have begun to disregard it. Why? because it creates an opportunity for only those who are willing to put in the work. Only well-optimized content takes the lead. Most Search Engine Optimization experts have a belief that an ideal keyword density is close to 1-2%. This means the target keyword should appear around one to two times in a count of 100 words. At this rate, the keyword appears enough times to show search engines what the page is about without keyword stuffing. This is not an ideal density for all articles, and many result in getting spammed because they try to increase the density with keyword stuffing. Here we explain some easy ways to avoid spam.

You can search your keyword density through either Yoast SEO or Rankmath SEO on wordpress.  For non wordpress checker, we suggest this keyword density checker.

How to find keyword density

To find the exact number of times you need to place each key phrase, use this formula:

(total words / [keyword x 100])= KW%

If there are 200 words on the page and you want to show your target keyword three times, then:

(200/3) = 67% KW density. For instance, if I want to rank for the phrase ” Facebook users  ” and there are 500 words on my page, how many times should I use that phrase?:

(500/100)= 5% KW density

If there are 2,000 words on the page and I have a main key word of “golf,” what percentage do I need it? Use this formula:

2,000/(keyword x 100) = 20%. If you’re trying to rank with multiple keywords, then add them all up first before dividing by 100. In other words: total words / (keyword1 x 100) + (keyword2 x 100)

If there are 300 words on the page and you want to rank for three different phrases, how many times do you need each in order to get your desired ratios? Use this formula:

(300/phrases x 100)= KW% In this example, if you want a ratio of 80%, 60%, and 40%:

(300/80×100) + (300/60×100) + (300/40×100)= 80%, 60%, and 40% KW density. With so much data out there about keyword density, what is it exactly that makes the difference when trying to “rank” for something? The importance of quality content:   By spending time and resources producing quality content, you create an opportunity to outrank your competition . Whether it involves writing more concisely or creating a bolder headline, the more effective your written material is, the higher chances you have of ranking. In order for Google’s robots (Googlebots) to find your pages, they need to be able to read them.  Keyword density helps search engines determine whether or not they should provide results of a particular web page in response to searcher queries.

How are "high keyword density" and "low keyword density" rankings determined?

The key here is how much space on the page each phrase takes up in relation to the total number of words filled with relevant text.  If the target keyword is placed in four places on a page versus twelve, then there is less of that phrase per page than if it were divided into six.  In other words:

(total number of word counts / [number of times keyword x 100])= KW% If you have an article with 300 words and want to rank for two phrases, here are your numbers:

300/2×100= 300%. This means that all of the relevant text on the page contains equal amounts of both key terms. On average, articles ranked for competitive keywords only take up about 30% density. Outranking competitors using content optimization strategies can produce long-lasting results . It may require more time upfront (since you’ll need to spend more time crafting a high-quality article), but you can reach your target audiences quicker and easier once the content is posted. By using relevant keywords throughout your articles, you provide added value to readers and those searching for the same topic .

Do key word densities vary between industries?

Yes! As mentioned above, the average keyword density for an entire page tends to fall around 30%.  This number can go up or down depending on what industry you are writing in. For example, there would be less text available if I was trying to write about “bobblehead collectibles” instead of general information on them. Also keep in mind that most search engines also recommend varying amounts of words per phrase percentage.

Several Tips on How to Reach an Optimal Keyword Density

To reach an optimal keyword density, we stuff them in, which may result in keyword cannibalization between different articles. Keyword stuffing is of two types. Classical Keyword Stuffing is when you frequently use the keywords or key phrases in an article. In such cases, the keyword density formula is computed by taking the square root of a total number of repetitions. Whereas, Academic Keyword Stuffing is the formula density of key requests together and sum of the words. If a large number of questions relate to a specific topic and appear on the page. It means that the page relates to that particular characteristic. Its suggestion or appearance is dependent on the total words and the total amount of the material. You are able to work-out keyword density without any external help. Our SEO Toronto team takes advantage of keyword density checkers set up by many providers.

Various search engines deal with keyword stuffing very seriously. There is no optimal index of keyword stuffing so you don’t have to go for any ideal index simply follow these rules:

  • Don’t over spam the pages. Modern algorithms analyze which articles are of the user’s interest. It then lowers the rank of overspent articles through search robots. So you must use the keyword tracker so that you don’t lose your website’s rank, in other words, you will need google penalty removed.
  • Don’t optimize one article for multiple topics because it looks inconsistent and hinders the aesthetics of the page. You can always develop several articles for different questions and place them on different pages.
  • The text should appear natural which means it should be attractive and productive for the users. You should write high-quality content and the optimal rate of Keyword density should be between 5% to 7%.

What is Keyword Density in SEO?

Keyword density is an important factor for On-Page Search Engine Optimization. Google’s main purpose is to match a user’s queries to the most compatible web pages. To match a webpage with a particular question google analyses the basic purpose of a web page. The use of keywords or key phrases will make it easier for Google to match your page with related questions and display your website as a result. It is very important that you do not spam your article with the keyword while you improve your content for SEO. You don’t want it to become difficult for the visitors to read it. This technique is what we know as over Optimization and it results in a negative impact on your ranking.

How to Improve Your Key Phrase Density?

Key phrase density means the number of times a keyword or phrase repeats in the article. You should be well aware of the clarity of your writing. Make sure that the meaning of the article is clear and does not deviate from the main topic at any point.

A high density of keywords means that your article is more likely to be spam. To improve the key phrase density, one should use synonyms of your key phrases so repetition and hence spamming the article can be avoided. Synonyms are not included in the key phrase density score which lessens your chances of getting your article marked as spam.

Conclusion

Ensure the adequate use of focused key phrases throughout the article. Yet, don’t exceed the maximum limit to avoid getting it marked as spam. This way google algorithms are not able to suspect that you have stuffed the article with keywords. Adding focused keywords into the article more often can also help in ranking in case the density is low. Our SEO Toronto team suggest that you should also stick to the topic and make your content as relevant as possible. This makes it easier to use keywords naturally. If the density is too high, replace the keyword with synonyms till the desired density is achieved.
