10 Lessons

1) Knowledge of the Industry Is Key to Everything Else

As Web design NYC team state that Knowledge is the primary reason why we’re where we are today. The more you know, the better your decisions will be. Not only that, but it empowers you to make your voice heard (that’s right – you have one).

2) You Need A Solid Plan of Action, or You’ll Fall Behind

There are always new things to learn. However, it’s important not to let yourself get distracted by what’s new at the expense of your existing projects, clients and income stream.

3) You Need To Know Your Market

This includes knowing what tools are used, because they can make all the difference in getting your sites completed quickly or having to use other methods to achieve the same results.

4) You Need To Know Yourself

Knowing yourself is one of the most important steps to achieving success. This includes knowing your limits and not trying to do too many things at once, as well as knowing what motivates you and gives you satisfaction.

This also ties into knowing what projects are best for you because you know your mindset and how you work best.

5) You Need To Be Flexible

We’ve found that it’s important to be flexible as a web designer, as well as knowing when to do something quickly and when to take more time for a better result.

This has helped us deliver great results for our clients while keeping ourselves sane and efficient.

6) You Need To Be Efficient

Efficiency will help you do more in less time and be able to work on different projects or initiatives at the same time, while not sacrificing quality.

In an industry where there’s no such thing as a standard process, being efficient is very important. It also comes in handy as a way of saying “no” to things you shouldn’t be doing.

7) You Need To Set Boundaries

We have a set daily routine, and we don’t allow interruptions for anything outside of emergencies.

This also helps us by focusing more deeply on our work during those times because we know that nothing outside of emergencies will disturb us.

This is important regardless if it’s your business, client work or personal projects.

8) You Need To Be The Best At What You Do (Or Know Someone Who Is)

No matter how good you think you are at what you do, there’s always room to improve and be better than before.

It’s important to have a network of other designers and developers that you can go to for help or advice. We find it’s also helpful just to be able to talk about things with people who understand what you’re going through, as well as being able to bounce ideas off them.

9) You Need To Reach Out To Others

The web design community is a great group of people who are willing to help you.

We’ve met some amazing people over the years that we now consider friends because of our shared interests and experiences.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to them, as they’re always happy to share what they know (and love). Just remember to return the favor. You also need aproductive team for your company, read our Tips For Creating Productive Web Development Team

10) You Need To Give Back And Inspire Others

Whether it’s blogging about what you know, helping others on forums or open source projects; giving back will not only help others but also improve your own skills and abilities.

We hope that this article helps give new designers some insight into how we all got started and provide some helpful tips to you should you wish to give creating your own online business a try.
