Pop-ups: Yay or Nay

Pop-ups are everywhere these days, but are they here to stay? Many people absolutely despise pop-ups while others seem to be fine with them. So, where do you stand on the debate about whether or not pop-ups should exist?

There seems to be a consensus that in order for website landing pages to make money, ads must be used. Websites need to make money somehow, and ads are an easy way to do that. However, they can be frustrating for website visitors.

Many web browsers have the option of ad blockers which will block all ads on websites you browse. This seems like a solution to the problem of bothersome pop-ups, but this isn’t quite true.

Reasons regarding Pop-ups

  • Our Web design Toronto and web design NYC agency think that pop-ups and other intrusive advertisements help pay the bills of websites and it seems like a fair trade if you ask some people. It costs nothing to browse the internet, so there’s no reason why we should be allowed to visit any website without seeing ads. It’s only fair that we receive ads in return for using the internet for free, right?
  • Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with this idea, especially our Singapore web design team. People who oppose pop-ups say they’re distracting and invasive–and they can be completely overwhelming! Some sites will have several pop-ups on a single page which makes it difficult to browse the website.
  • Pop-ups are especially annoying on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram where they’re often referred to as “reminder ads.” Basically, these pop-ups will show you advertisements for things you might also be interested in purchasing or doing. These reminders seem helpful at first glance but if one pops up once a day, they can quickly become too frequent and annoying, thus increasing your website’s bounce rate .

should use pop-ups or not?

There’s a thin line between helpful reminder ads and overwhelming pop-ups. It seems like a fair trade to receive ads in return for using a website for free, but the fine print on the “contract” is often overlooked. If you’re going to have intrusive advertisements, make sure you aren’t overwhelming your website visitors. Having a tone of pop-ups are bad for your SEO strategy and SEO rankings

When deciding whether or not to use pop-ups, one has to consider where they will be most effective and if the cost of using them is worth it. It’s important to take into account how frequently the ads will appear and whether or not they’re helpful reminders. In order for a pop-up to be effective, it has to get the website visitor’s attention and care about what they’re advertising.
